The Galt Joint Union Elementary School Board of Trustees on June 22 discussed summer construction projects, student achievement plans and a proposed maintenance building.

The construction projects set to take place throughout the district over the summer include portable removals and sink additions at Vernon E. Greer Elementary School; fencing around Lake Canyon Elementary School; and recarpeting in classrooms at various schools.

The board also discussed the potential of upgrading school marquees to digital displays. Multiple schools are located at high-traffic areas, which could be used for messaging, specifically on important school dates and encouraging more participation from parents and the community. Superintendent Lois Yount will look at estimates for such a project.

Principals from each of the Galt elementary schools presented their Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA). Among the most highlighted points were the hard work of the schools’ mental health professionals and the implementation of new amenities for students, such as calming corners. Students can take advantage of this when under stress, and principals said they witnessed how helpful this has been, as student behavior throughout the school year improved greatly following these additions.

“There’s definitely a commonality,” Trustee Tom Silva said of the SPSAs. “The thing that stood out to me was the concerns for social/emotional learning, the MTSS supports, the fact that those supports were in place, and how important and impactful that was. It’s important for us as a board to get that feedback, that those were good decisions we made to help put those supports in place.”

A proposal was also presented to the board to create a new prefab shop building. Currently, the district maintenance department does not have a designated location; they instead work out of portables. Concerns with this arrangement include recent theft of expensive equipment and various safety issues. The proposal would place this new building at the mechanic shop on Beaver Parkway. The estimated price for contractor DCA Architects to begin work on this project is roughly $117,000. The board unanimously approved the proposal.

The next board meeting will take place on Aug. 17.
